Once you advance into management in your career you will understand the importance of developing your own skills to achieve greater success. A vital part of being a manager is how you develop the staff you are responsible for and this can make your life easier if done correctly. There are various examples of successful entrepreneurs and companies and one of the common factors in their achievements seems to be the strength of the team supporting them. If your staff members are happy and motivated, you will have a team that is pulling in the same direction and more likely to produce great results.

The first element to managing a team comes down to your recruitment policy and ensuring that you select the right people for particular roles. This requires you to have exceptional interviewing skills and to have a very clear idea of the type of individual you want as part of your team. If you find somebody who seems to have all the technical skills for a particular job but does not have the right personality, then you need to use your judgment in making your selection. The last thing you want is somebody who is disruptive, so assessing what motivates a candidate and the way they answer your questions is vital in finding the right person.

It is a fact that training is crucial to ensuring your staff have the right skills to perform their duties and so this needs to be planned carefully. If you assess people as individuals you have a greater chance of putting beneficial training in place that will not be seen as a waste of time by those participating. There will be those that must have coaching in areas like people skills and others that maybe need more technically based training. In other words, you should tailor the training based on what you see as a development need for a particular person.

If you take an interest in your staff as individuals, you're going to receive more loyalty from them as a result. If you get to know them for what they do outside of the working environment as well, you're going to get a better understanding of what motivates them and also become aware of any problems they may have. As a manager, there will be times when you need to provide strong leadership if matters need to be attended to but equally you will want to have empathy with anyone who is experiencing any challenges.

If your staff are doing well don't forget to give praise and to encourage more of the same. If the working environment is a happy one, you are more likely to get high levels of performance from your team and this should certainly be your aim as a manager. If there is any member of your staff that is under performing, you should handle this tactfully as well as being clear about what your expectations are. If you are fair but show strong leadership, you're going to gain respect from your staff and if they are aware you're interested in their career goals, they should be more focused and motivated.

The success you have as a manager will be reflected in your ability to develop your staff so that everyone is performing at the highest level possible.
